A Strategic Plan for International Activities (Draft) (August 2001)
(PDF, 55kb)
The international activities of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering provide great benefit to Australian science, technology and engineering. The current arrangements under which the Department of Industry, Sciences and Resources (ISR) provides funding of $A235,000 per annum to the Academy as part of ISR’s Technology Diffusion Program, “leverages” in kind support of about the same value from the Academy and its Fellows. International activities fostered by ATSE have included workshops, symposia, exchanges and delegations. Real benefits have been derived by Australia from these activities. Such activities should be focussed on a number of priority countries and priority topics that are identified in this report.

Report on APEC Foresight Project: Healthy Futures for APEC Mega-Cities, APEC Experts Meeting, Bangkok, Thailand (May 2000)
(PDF, 160kb)
There were 8 APEC mega-cities in 1995 with 12 projected in 2015. These population sizes are based on political boundaries of the city. The 'functional urban system' may extend beyond these boundaries into neighbouring areas. The integrating factors in this larger functional urban system are improved road and rail links, including toll-ways, and high speed (broad-band) communications and their convergence with information technologies. The aim of the Healthy Mega-cities project is to improve the health, efficiency and prosperity of present and future APEC Mega-cities.
Report on a Technical and Administrative Mission to Korea (May 2000)
(PDF, 91kb)
The Joint Australia Korea Light Metals Workshop held in Cheju from 25-27 May 2000 provided a good opportunity for the Academies International Relations Officers to meet with Australian and Korea researchers for international networking and to promote co-operation between Australia and Korea. Visits to Korean universities and Research Centres also provided an excellent opportunity for new contacts and these are detailed later in the Report.
Report on the conference on "Future Urban Transport - Problems and Solutions, Interactive Conference", Gothenburg, Sweden (March 2000)
(PDF, 142kb)
The conference discussed the future of urban transport at an international level. Sponsored by Volvo, Sweden, it was oriented to future urban road transport, and its outcomes are intended to guide Volvo's broad Research Foundation program. The participants were invited from industry, academies, universities and research groups. Its five sessions over three days were oriented to:
1. Urban/transport history and geography, human behaviour, and the role of infrastructure; 2. Function and efficiency of transport; 3. Energy consumption and environmental aspects; 4. Safety and prevention of traffic accidents, the care of injured in large urban areas, and 5. In a final session: critical issues for the future - needs and actions.
Report on Inaugural Joint Academies Workshop on Coal Bed Methane Technology, Beijing (November 1999)
(PDF, 51kb)
Coal is a critical resource for the competitive and economic development of both Australia and the People's Republic of China. The Inaugural Workshop in Beijing was hosted by the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and to which the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) sent a delegation specialising in one aspect of clean coal technology, coal bed methane. Selected ATSE papers are available on-line.
Report on a Visit to South Africa (November 1999)
(PDF, 84kb)
The SAAE, in collaboration with the South African Civil Engineering Advisory Council (CEAC), organised the Symposium and invited participation by ATSE. The topic and programme were jointly agreed by all sponsoring bodies. The Symposium considered the role of Public-Private Partnerships in four major infrastructure sectors, those of: Electric Power; Transport; Water and Telecommunications. The ATSE papers are available on-line.

The meeting was preceded by an APEC R&D Leaders’ Forum to which ATSE was invited.
Report on Czech-Australian Workshop on Directions of Prospective Cooperation (April 1997)
(PDF, 47kb)
A possible activity arising from this Memorandum was the concept of structured workshops on selected topics which expose a group of visiting experts to their peers in the host country with a view to identifying joint research topics. In the case of universities, such projects could be funded under the Memorandum of Understanding on Research Co-operation between the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic (GA CR) and the Australian Research Council (ARC) signed in Prague on 29 August 1996. Under this MoU, Czech and Australian researchers as Partner Chief Investigators would submit applications to both granting agencies to support their joint research co-operation. In the case of ARC, these would be considered under the Large Grants Scheme.
