Australia has high quality science in the field of emerging infectious disease threats. However it is not linked as a joined process, this severely hampers the responsiveness to a threat. We were able to respond to Hendra when it appeared, but the linkage of discovery to vaccine dissipated after the work was done. We have very real threats both internationally and locally.
A distributed pipeline for vaccine and related agents is being built. The value here is not only allowing for a more rapid and organised approach to infectious diseases, but a setting for workforce development, new funding models, enhanced surveillance, basic and applied science and most importantly the collaboration of Australia's expertise into a science generating and delivering platform.
