ATSE Fellows and their partners are invited on a wonderful 4-day, 3-night guided tour to Kangaroo Island.
Kangaroo Island is Australia’s third largest island and lies off the mainland of South Australia, southwest of Adelaide and about 14 km from the mainland. It is one of Australia's great wilderness destinations, and is best known for its magnificent coastal views, unique landscapes, uncrowded beaches and fascinating wildlife, including kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, Australian sea-lions, New Zealand fur seals, penguins and an abundance of bird life. Over a third of the island is protected in nature reserves.
The original Australian indigenous population disappeared after the land, originally connected to the mainland, became an island following rising sea levels at the end of the last ice age. The island was subsequently settled from the early 19th century onwards, at first casually by sealers and whalers, and then as part of the growing colony of South Australia from 1836. Since then the island's economy has principally been agricultural and fisheries, but with tourism of growing importance.
We fly directly from Sydney to Adelaide (and return) with Qantas. Our transport from Adelaide Airport to Kangaroo Island (via the ferry from Cape Jervis), and also for our duration of our visit to Kangaroo Island, is by luxury tour bus. We’ll stay at the 4-star Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge located on the banks of Eastern Cove in American River, and experience a number of selected environmentally and historically orientated tours with informed commentary by a local guide.
