Bitcoin and blockchain are frequently mentioned in the news and conversations but very few people fully understand what they are, how they work and how disruptive they may be. I provide an introduction into Bitcoin and the blockchain technology and answer the following questions:

Dirk Baur holds a Master degree in Economics and received his Ph.D. in Financial Econometrics from the University of Tübingen, Germany in 2003. He worked for the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (2003-2005), was a Post-doctoral fellow at Trinity College Dublin (2005-2007) and a Lecturer at Dublin City University (2007-2009). From 2009-2014, Dirk was Associate Professor of Finance at the University of Technology, Sydney and then at the Kuehne Logistics University in Hamburg in 2015.
Dirk's specialises in financial economics and financial econometrics - specifically, in the economics of gold, modelling and estimation of financial contagion, dependence modelling and empirical applications of quantile regression. Currently, he researches gold, energy commodities, mining economics, financial contagion, Bitcoin and blockchain.
Dirk currently serves on a range of editorial boards, including the Finance Research Letters and the Journal of International Financial Markets. He has published 35 articles in international peer-reviewed academic journals.
