Too often we hear of great research outcomes created in Australia and then sold off for commercialisation overseas. The story of Micro-X Ltd inverts this: a novel X-Ray generation technique acquired from a research group in US by Micro-X, an Australian start up established for that purpose. From this base, Micro-X has developed the world’s smallest and lightest mobile digital X-Ray machines for hospitals, which is now being manufactured by Micro-X in Australia, and is being marketed and distributed by Carestream (ex Kodak), the world’s leading medical digital X-Ray company, into about 150 countries world wide.
Chair of the Victorian Division of ATSE
He was the founding director of Invetech (1976) and still has a position as an associate with that company. He has been working in the field of process and product development and related R&D, for clients ranging from high tech start ups to "smoke-stack" industry global companies, for over 50 years
This has provided an exceptional base of practical experience on what it takes to progress research outcomes and new technologies to commercial success. Since retiring from Invetech he has been working in assisting universities and start ups along the commercialisation journey, primarily in medtech.
He is a fellow of the Academy of Technology and Engineering and a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers Australia. He sits on a number of Boards including that of Micro-X Ltd, and he sits on the Boards of two CRCs. He is a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
