ATSE President, Professor Hugh Bradlow, said secondary school STEM teachers needed deep discipline expertise that gave them self-confidence in the classroom if they were going to inspire students.

“The majority of the fastest growing occupations require significant STEM skills and knowledge,” he said.
“Price Waterhouse Coopers estimates that 75 per cent of all replacement jobs in the next 15 years will require some degree of STEM skills.
“Reports by the Australian Chief Scientist and others have drawn attention to the falling participation rates by senior secondary school students in science and advanced mathematics.
“There are major implications for Australia’s future economic prosperity – and human and environmental health – if the numbers of students undertaking STEM-based degrees at university are not increased. These include students who will ultimately take up careers in teaching.”
The Federal Government proposal, which needs backing by state governments, is in line with recommendations made by ATSE in 2016 and reiterated since.
“I would urge state governments to get behind this initiative, which will benefit students and ultimately the economy,” Professor Bradlow said.
Professor Bradlow was previously Chief Technology Officer and Head of Innovation at Telstra. He was named by Global Telecom Business as one of the most 100 most influential telecommunications executives in the world.
