There is an urgent, ongoing and likely expanding need to better understand the construction and operation of civil infrastructure in Australia, including transport, energy, water and communications infrastructure. This critical infrastructure provides an enabling role for most other forms of economic activity.
The Expert Working Group for the National Infrastructure Roadmap, chaired by Chief Scientist Alan Finkel, released a draft Roadmap in December. This followed an initial consultation to the National Research Infrastructure Capability Issues Paper in July and August 2016. ATSE submitted a brief response to the draft Roadmap, congratulating the EWG on the document and strongly supporting the inclusion on digital data and eResearch platforms as a Focus Area.
In support of the EWG’s approach, the Academy made the following recommendations for the inclusion of two additional focus areas:
The Academy reiterated its earlier recommendation that the dormant Education Investment Fund be examined as a funding source for the Roadmap Investment Plan recommended in the draft.
