The Industry Mentoring Network in STEM (IMNIS) is our award-winning industry-led initiative.

IMNIS connects motivated PhD students and postdoctoral fellows in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) with outstanding high-level industry leaders in a one-year mentoring and professional development program. IMNIS Catalyst is an ambassador-style program where former IMNIS mentees represent IMNIS and ATSE in the broader STEM ecosystem.

Beyond the Lab is a webinar series for students in years 8 to 12 around Australia in which IMNIS Catalysts will share their non-traditional STEM Career Journeys. This series is presented by the STELR Project (STELR) as part of the Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series (VCES).

WEEK 6 — Dr Beatrice Chiew and Tian Nie

Join IMNIS Catalysts Dr Beatrice Chiew and Tian Nie as they discuss their career journeys and their life Beyond The Lab.

Beatrice completed her bachelor’s degree at the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (MIPS) majoring in Medicinal Chemistry. She then went on to do her Honours and PhD discovering potent inhibitors or chemical blockers for use against HIV and BRCA-1 breast cancer.

Tian is a third-year PhD student at the University of Melbourne, where she uses mouse models to study the long-term effects of hormone therapies on bone among transgender people. She is interested in exploring the impacts of basic science research on society, from science communication to policy making and believes that science should serve both people and the pursuit of knowledge.
