Global connections

Ideas know no borders. That’s why we organise exchanges, workshops and conferences that bring together Australian researchers and experts with counterparts from across Asia and beyond.

We work with sister academies across the world through the International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences, which the Academy helped found.

And we have programs under way with organisations in a range of countries, including China, Japan, India and South Korea.

Global Connections Fund

The Academy runs the Global Connections Fund, which is supported by the Australian Government. It is part of the Global Innovation Strategy under the Australian Government’s National Innovation and Science Agenda.

The GCF provides initial funding to promote international collaboration between researchers and small to medium enterprises (SMEs).

Priming Grants are focused on building links between Australian SMEs and international researchers, and Australian researchers and international SMEs, with the aim of generating commercialisation outcomes.

Bridging Grants of up to $50,000 help international SME-researcher partnerships grow beyond an initial level of engagement to collaboration that can lead to the translation of research knowledge and intellectual property into market-ready products or services.

See the 2019 Award details here.

The Grant Rounds are currently closed, with an update on their continuation expected in 2020.

Read about the grants and their impact in the publications at the bottom of the page.

Australia-China Young Scientists Exchange Programme

YSEP funds an annual two-way exchange of Australian and Chinese early to mid-career researchers in the fields of science, engineering, technology and medicine.

The 2019 visit to China took place over two weeks from 20 October-1 November.

As well as promoting research collaboration, the programme aims to increase researchers’ understanding of the cultures and scientific research practices and systems of the two countries, and to develop their leadership skills.

The programme is funded by the Australian Department of Industry, Innovation and Science and the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology. It is supported by the Australia-China Strategic Research Fund.

The 2020 program is currently on hold due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions.

The Academy manages the programme in Australia while the China Science and Technology Exchange Centre does so in China.
