ATSE recognises Minister’s STEM advocacy

29 March 2021

The Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE) today thanked the Hon Karen Andrews MP for her work as Industry, Science and Technology minister and wished her well in her new portfolio of Home Affairs.

As well as a commitment to the creation and application of Australian science, technology and engineering, Ms Andrews has long been a passionate advocate for women in STEM.

She supported ATSE and the Australian Academy of Science to develop the Women in STEM Decadal Plan, appointed Australia’s first Ambassador for Women in STEM, and has advocated strongly for increased women’s participation at all levels of the STEM sector.

Ms Andrews has been a champion of industry, supporting greater collaboration with research and recognising the importance of strengthening local manufacturing.

ATSE welcomes the news that the portfolio of Industry, Science and Technology will remain in Cabinet and urges Christian Porter to continue the good work established by his predecessor.

These portfolios will continue to play an important role as Australia recovers from the effects of the COVID pandemic, and builds resilience as it responds to climate change.
