Opal Tower issues still unresolved

22 May 2019

Five months after the dramatic evacuation of Opal Tower in Sydney, there are still questions to be resolved affecting residents, the construction industry and regulators.

Professor Mark Hoffman FTSE, one of the three experts commissioned by the NSW Government to report on the incident, will be speaking tomorrow (Thursday) in Sydney on the issues it raised.

Professor Hoffman is Dean of Engineering at UNSW and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering.

He will be addressing an event organised by the NSW Division of the Academy entitled “Opal Tower: The tip of the iceberg? What should be done now?”

Professor Hoffman said: “Some say the report raises more questions about the building industry in Australia than any other in our history.

“I’ll be addressing issues such as, are our buildings safe? Is our construction system set up for innovation, or is it struggling? Has government moved with the industry, or been caught behind? What ramifications will emerge from the Opal Tower incident?”

The event will take place from 12pm at the Union, University and Schools Club, 25 Bent Street, Sydney.
