Orica: Championing STEM futures through IMNIS mentoring partnership

Orica, a global leader in mining and infrastructure solutions, is making a meaningful difference to the future of STEM in Australia, through its support to ATSE’s Industry Mentoring Network in STEM program (IMNIS).

Orica, a global leader in mining and infrastructure solutions, is making a meaningful difference to the future of STEM in Australia, through its support to ATSE’s Industry Mentoring Network in STEM program (IMNIS).

Through this collaboration, Orica is not only advancing STEM education and career development — but also growing its own leadership pipeline. The IMNIS initiative provides a unique platform for Orica’s emerging and senior technology leaders to step up as mentors, enhancing their leadership capabilities while also supporting the next generation of STEM talent.

Sharing insights, answering questions, and helping them explore what that path could look like has been a meaningful experience.

Kelly Robinson, Manager, Technology – Research & Innovation, Orica

“I've really enjoyed being part of the IMNIS program and supporting PhD candidates who are curious about careers in industry. Sharing insights, answering questions, and helping them explore what that path could look like has been a meaningful experience. Mentoring has also helped me grow — it's sharpened my listening and coaching skills and given me a fresh perspective on the value of curiosity and learning. If you're an industry leader considering mentoring, I highly recommend it—it's a powerful way to give back and embody the values of collaboration and continuous learning.” said Kelly Robinson, Manager, Technology – Research & Innovation, Orica

Bridging academia and industry

IMNIS is an award-winning national initiative of ATSE - the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering that connects motivated PhD students (Mentees) with experienced industry professionals (Mentors) across a wide range of STEM sectors. IMNIS helps Mentees gain practical insights, grow professional networks and build confidence in navigating STEM careers outside academia.

For Orica, IMNIS represents a powerful platform to live out its purpose — to sustainably mobilise the earth’s resources — and to build a stronger and future-ready STEM capability in Australia.

I strongly believe that bridging the gap between the academic and industry worlds is critical, especially for PhD candidates who have recently migrated to Australia.

Armineh Hassanvand, Research Fellow, Orica

In reflecting on her mentoring experience, Armineh added: “The IMNIS team provides excellent support and structure for this program, and I have enjoyed every minute spent with the passionate PhD candidates I have been paired with. At Orica, we have a strong focus on community support and are strong advocates of promoting STEM education and emerging STEM professionals.”

Mentorship that makes a difference

Orica mentors are already creating a lasting impact through the IMNIS program, sharing their time, expertise and leadership to support emerging STEM professionals.

Mentoring with IMNIS enables me to support emerging female STEM professionals and to address the barriers to enter technology careers.

Janaki Mehta, Senior Manager – IT Portfolio & Projects, Orica

The benefits are mutual — mentors consistently describe how mentoring helps sharpen their own leadership, coaching and communication skills, fostering a workplace culture of learning and growth.

The engagement with my mentee has been pleasing and the depth and breadth of conversations regarding goals and ambitions had have led to many follow up conversations.

Melanie Bradley, Research Fellow – Explosives Technology Development, Orica

A model for industry-led STEM development

Orica’s support to IMNIS is a powerful example of how industry can invest in the development of Australia’s future STEM leaders while cultivating its own talent.

By participating in IMNIS, organisations like Orica gain access to a national network of high-potential research students, demonstrate leadership in STEM workforce development, and foster a culture of mentoring that benefits everyone.
