International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences

ATSE is an active, founding member of CAETS.

The International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences (CAETS) consists of the national engineering Academies from around the world.

Through CAETS, Academies around the world collaborate on technology-related issues of global significance and maintain strong bilateral relations.

CAETS Communication Prize

The International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences (CAETS) wishes to encourage technological scientists and engineers around the world to effectively communicate in a simple and engaging manner with general audiences, with a focus on young people and students. This is done through a competitive selection of short videos of no more than 5 minutes in length explaining the societal importance of technological breakthroughs and engineering successes. Such videos have the dual aim of inspiring students to follow careers in engineering and technological sciences, and educating the general public on the impact that engineering and technological sciences have in their lives and future.

The annual CAETS Communication Prize recognizes the best of such videos from member Academies globally. The prize is awarded to the most outstanding audiovisual communication of excellence and innovation in technological sciences or engineering. The winning entry will have clearly communicated the successful identification of and solution for a problem, with the outcome being of benefit to the economy or society, either nationally or internationally.

2026 Communication Prize

Entries to the 2026 prize are now open, and close on 31 March 2026.

Entries are judged on their clarity, engagement, and ability to make complex ideas accessible and inspiring to non-specialists. The international winner receives a USD 5,000 prize and funded travel to the CAETS Annual Meeting in Germany in September 2026 where they will be formally recognised.

The winning Australian entry will be selected by a committee of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, and submitted to the international judging process in April 2026.

Entry requirements

  • The submitted video should clearly and engagingly communicate the value and impact of engineering and technological innovation to a broad audience.
  • Any Australian innovator or communicator (as an individual or on behalf of an organisation) can submit an entry to the Prize.
  • The video must be publicly available and can be produced in any language. Non-English videos are only required to include accurate English subtitles.

Submission

Completed application forms should be sent to communications@atse.org.au by 5:00pm on Tuesday 31 March 2026.

2024

2024

Mikaela Jade selected as Australia’s CAETS Communication Prize finalist 2024.

Congratulations to Mikaela Jade FTSE, CEO of Indigital, for being selected as Australia’s lead entrant into the international Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Science (CAETS) Communication Prize.

The Indigital video showcases the way they are using digital technologies to learn Indigenous heritage, and the use of First Nations culture to teach digital skills. The CAETS Communication Prize aims to highlight examples of engineering and technological science innovation addressing major challenges in our society.

Indigital aims to create a culturally-inclusive digital future for all. They are building digital skills and cultural connection through a number of student and teacher-focused programs for schools. ATSE is excited to be putting forward this example of Traditional Knowledge to represent Australian technological science and engineering innovation on the world stage.

Professor Guan Yeoh’s video introducing the fire-resistant paint he and his team developed has also been selected as an Australian entrant in the Prize. The FSA Firecoat paint is the world’s leading paint providing extreme fire protection, helping to safeguard homes and buildings at risk from bushfires.
