Submission to the National Water Reform Interim Update 2 consultation

This submission calls for improvements in how Australia defines, monitors and preserves high-quality water.

This submission builds on ATSE’s initial submission to this review, focusing on cross-cutting actions to underpin and strengthen the National Water Initiative that can be readily considered for implementation.

This submission responds to the framing and Terms of Reference of the National Water Initiative (NWI) Interim Assessment with fifteen proposed recommendations grouped along the following topics:

  • Aligning National Water Reform with the New National Water Agreement
  • Developing frameworks to balance stakeholder interests
  • Groundwater, connectivity and future water systems
  • Urban water reform and economic regulation
  • Closing the water gap for regional, rural and remote communities
  • Re-establishing governance through a National Water Commission
  • Sustaining knowledge, capacity and capability
