Biography at time of election

Dr. Andrew Green is an internationally recognised leader in signal processing as applied to geophysics and remote sensing.

He pioneered digital processing of satellite imagery in Australia. with emphasis on noise removal and contrast enhancement.

His work played a major role in the establishment of the Australian Landsat Station in 1979, and in the 1980s he was responsible for the subsequent development of a low cost, high efficiency processor for the Thematic Mapper Satellite system.

Both projects were central to Australia's adoption and use of satellite remote sensing, and led to his sharing the Australia Prize for 1995, for "outstanding contributions to science and technology promoting human welfare".

He has made major contributions to the mathematical processes used to remove noise from airborne geophysical measurements, and in the management of research in CSIRO, invariably in conjunction with the Australian mining industry.
