Born Melbourne April 8, 1945, educated at Camberwell Central School , Wesley College, University of Melbourne (B.Sc and M.Sc) and UNSW (Ph.D). Post-doc. Univ. of London Kings College (1969-71). Then at Univ. of Newcastle from 1971-1986, leaving as Professor and Dean of Mathematics. University of Melbourne 1987-2018, and Founding Director of AMSI (2001-2). Director of ARC Centre of Excellence in Mathematics and Statistics of Complex Systems (2002-2016). Retired Dec. 2018. Currently Chair, Advisory board of MATRIX.

Biography at time of election

Tony Guttmann has an outstanding record as a research in a range of areas in Mathematics and Physical Sciences and has been recognised as such by his peers, in Australia and internationally, through the award of a range of academic prizes. As Director of MASCOS he is responsible for Australia's only major mathematics research centre, with sixteen Chief Investigators, including three Federation Fellows. He is leader in developing partnerships with amthematical research users in industry, government and in medical and other research institutes. Professor Guttmann has been closely involved in advising and developing curriculum for teaching mathematics in schools.
