Biography at time of election

Prof. Burgess' early research was directed to an understanding of the molecular interactions determining the shapes folding of peptides and proteins. With Donald Metcalf, he was involved in the discovery of G-CSF and other hormones (GM-CSF and multi-CSF, also called interlaukin-3). His research on the design of new amino acids for restraining peptides is science which will have long-term ramifications for the design of technologically important peptide antagonists. He is now at an exciting phase of his research career where he is able to contribute to the development of new anti-cancer therapeutics that the Institute is using clinically.
