Biography at time of election

Dr Bill Burrows is one of Australia's most accomplished experts in native vegetation and its management under grazing. His meticulous work identifying the causes of change in the mulga vegetation associations in South West Queensland has resulted in a management plan to promote sustainable practices in that region. His foresight in establishing woodland/pasture monitoring sites in the tropical sovannahs, and the result achieved, has underpinned the Australian case for differential targets for carbon dioxide emissions. Dr Burrow's figures indicate that the regrowth that occurs when native pastures are grazed in open eucalyptus woodlands results in tree thickening and creates a sink that reduces the original estimates of Australia's net emissions by around 30%. His work, which first understood the cology and recognised the significance of regrowth in savannahs, has genrated new tree clearing guidlines in Queensland as well as contributing to the international debate on the factors that determine net "greenhouse" gas production. His work has been a major contributor to the reconciliation of the needs of the environmentalists and the pastoralists, through appropriate management and as a consequence, he has been made the senior technical advisor to the Government of Queensland on tree-clearing issues. He is rspected by both beef producers and conservationists.
