Biography at time of election

For 15 years Dr. Booth has led an R & D team, working on two Veterinary Research Stations and in Development Laboratories formulating for Veterinary, Industrial and, more recently, Medical Pharmaceutical applications. These units have played a major part in assisting Australia's primary production and safeguarding our export markets.

The requirement of importing countries that grains should be virtually insect-free was a problem to the Australian Wheat Board in the 1950's until a team led by Booth developed a grain protectant based upon Malathion, which when applied at a rate of 8 ppm protected from insect presence for several months.
It was later adopted in South America and Africa.

Booth invented new concentrated preparations of insecticide free from organic solvents and consisting solely of insecticide and surface active agents. These overcame damage to the conveyor belting used in silos and also removed the risk of solvent toxicity to operators. Over $15,000 million worth oe grains (150 million tonnes) have been treated in Australia with these preparations and the second generation insecticides -the synthetic pyrethroids - also developed in Australia by this team as grain protectants, are now being used where insects have become resistant to Malathion. This novel approach has saved the country an estimated $200 million from loss by insect attack and has protected export markets.

Booth has developed for the animal industry, similar concentrated formulations which have led to cost reductions of 75% in freight and packing materials per unit of active ingredient and to products generally more biologically effective and less damaging to the ecology. Patents have been applied for and are held in several countries.
