Biography at time of election

All of Mr. Loton's professional career has been with The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. and during this time he has been closely associated with engineering and development work.

While he was Assistant Chief Engineer Newcastle, he led an engineering delegation in London which co-ordinated the design of major steelworks' developments and these included a new Basic Oxygen Steelmaking Plant for Newcastle, at that time one of
the world's largest, an Oxygen Plant and a Rod Mill and a Structural Mill.

Later he was closely associated with the Company's mineral developments, including the establishment of the Groote Eylandt manganese mine (one of the world's major producers}, the Mt. Newman iron ore operation, and tin exploration and development in Indonesia.

Mr. Loton has always been keen to encourage innovation and new developments, and the application of new technology, and in his present position he is able to encourage the development of these views throughout the many and varied activities of BHP.
