Dr Hetzel played the pivotal role in the international team that produced the world's first bovine genetic map using the International Bovine Reference Family Panel that he developed. The map is the foundation for a wide range of molecular genetics research. His research group successfully mapped genes responsible for carcase and meat quality, Pompe's disease, horns in cattle and developed a bovine DNA fingerprinting system. In 1998 he established Genetics Solutions Pty Ltd to pioneer the commercial applications of DNA technology to improve Australia's livestock industries.
