Biography at time of election
German technology is well known for its leadership in many fields, and Dr Rohkamm leads one of Germany's major industrial groups comprising about 200 companies. Dr Rohkamm is recognised in Australia through the contribution of Blohm+ Voss to the ANZAC frigate programme, and from his involvement in German-Australian industrial cooperation. As President of the German- Australian Association, he has chaired a number of recent development/ investment conferences in Australia . He has maintained and extended significant connections with engineering in Australia over the past fifteen years. In 1993 he was made an Honorary Officer of the Order of Australia.
In senior positions and eventually as Chief Executive of Blohm + Voss AG, and currently as Chief Executive of Thyssen Industrie AG, a major European industrial conglomerate, Dr Rohkamm has shown high international achievements in innovative leadership of technological industries. He enhanced the reputation of Blohm+ Voss as a world leader in design and construction of naval vessels. The MEKO concept of modular warship design and production was developed and applied under his leadership. In an innovative approach, the ships hull is designed to accommodate a number of standard size modules, which are fitted out in workshops and installed during the final stages of ship assembly. The approach has led to substantially reduced building times, and significantly reduced building costs. He has been closely involved in high speed transport developments. Blohm + Voss developed and trialled the MEKAT high speed surface effect ship. He has been personally involved with Thyssen Henschel, a member of the Thyssen Industrie Group, in development of the magnetically levitated Transrapid High Speed Train. He is an innovative manager, and under his leadership Blohm + Voss AG substantially increased shipbuilding and ship repair productivity, and contributed substantial profits to the Thyssen Group.
