Professor Flora Salim is a highly regarded authority in artificial intelligence, machine learning and spatiotemporal data analytics. She pioneered foundation-model approaches for time-series and multimodal data, establishing cross-modal machine learning and alignment methods – including with large language models – that now influence international research and industrial practice, and have been adopted by major industrial research labs. Her work is shaping best practice in automated decision-making, and underpins AI systems used in defence decision support, urban mobility forecasting, energy-efficient buildings and infectious disease modelling. She has delivered real-world decision-making systems with patented and deployed solutions in productivity software, digital health, transport systems, smart cities and digital infrastructure. Professor Salim leads major multidisciplinary research programs advancing responsible and explainable AI, and harnessing machine learning to deliver trustworthy carbon emissions and sustainability reporting. She also shapes national research direction through roles on the Australian Academy of Sciences’ National Committee for Information and Computing Sciences and as a member of the Australian Research Council College of Experts.
