Professor Graciela Metternicht has made outstanding contributions to the development and application of geospatial technologies, earth observation and integrated environmental assessment to address complex sustainability challenges. Her research – spanning land degradation, spatial planning and sustainable development – has informed governments, industry and international organisations. She has developed earth-observation methods to translate complex environmental data into decision support systems. These operational solutions have generated on-the-ground impact in agriculture, carbon projects and landscape restoration. Professor Metternicht has contributed expertise to global science‐policy processes through the United Nations Environment Programme, the World Meteorological Organization, the UN Convention to Combat Desertification and Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services. Through senior leadership roles in academia, she has built interdisciplinary teams, mentored emerging researchers and scaled inclusive STEM initiatives. She also serves as a member of the Threatened Species Scientific Committee, providing independent evidence-based advice to strengthen biodiversity conservation and support biodiversity conservation in Australia.
