OBITUARY

Dr Graham Allison died on 2/9/2025.

Dr Graham Allison FTSE was a noted hydrologist, whose work in applied hydrology developed methods for understanding the movement of water at the surface and subsurface, and many other aspects of water flow in the landscape. He was elected to ATSE in 1989 as a member of the South Australian and Northern Territory Division.

He was Chief of the CSIRO Division of Water Resources from 1988 to 1997. He brought his expertise to several boards after leaving CSIRO, including the SA Water Corporation and the Kangaroo Island Natural Resources Management Board.

His work on the salinisation of the Murray-Darling Basin in the mid-1980s had a major impact on the management of the Basin at the time.

Biography at time of election

Dr G B Allison, the current Chief of the CSIRO Division of Water Resources, has made a significant contribution to hydrologic research and its application.

Together with the International Atomic Energy Agency and with several other international organisations he has been a key figure in developing the use of stable isotope techniques for the solving of practical problems in hydrology. The team he heads is a leader in this field of research.

Dr Allison's achievements in applied hydrology include the development of methods for determining the source of both surface and subsurface waters and for evaluating groundwater recharge and discharge rates. The techniques he has developed are becoming widely used both nationally and internationally.

Recently he has played a key role in establishing a joint CSIRO/University Centre and is the Director of this Centre.
