Biography at time of election

One of the major outputs from biotechnology will be new and improved vaccines and diagnostic tests for parasites of medical and veterinary importance. Dr. Graham Mitchell is a leader in this country in the field of "parasite biotechnology". He is distinguished for his major contribullons to the immunology of parasitic diseases and the programme that
he initiated in the mid 1970s in The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute
of Medical Research has become the largest single group within the Institute. Strong international and commercial linkages exist and the extraordinary information output is evidenced by the 272 publications in immunoparasitology and molecular parasitology in the ten year period from 1976. He was the first to demonstrate the power of monoclonal antibodies for diagnosis of parasitic diseases. He and his colleagues are at the forefront of global endeavours to develop vaccines against malaria, schistosomiasis and leishmaniasis and his work has made immunoparasitology a major field in biomedical research and a prominent feature of the biotechnology revolution.
