Professor Steven has made significant contributions to the underlying theory of aerospace structures and to the development of practical tools for the design of such structures. His efforts have led to the formation of a very active group in this area in the Department of Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Sydney. He has strongly promoted these tools in both the aerospace industry and in the areas of general industry that can benefit from these advanced methods. This promotion has included direct participation in the creation of commercial software for structural analysis and extensive consultation in industry.
