Dr Blackburne developed Ampol's research department into a group which provides world class technological applications in refinery processes, agricultural spray oils, and the art of grease manufacture. As Chief Executive he continues to facilitate these objectives. His initial period was followed by extensive and varied management experience. He was instrumental in planning and implementing the Ampol/Caltex merger forming what is now Australia's largest downstream petroleum company. As its CEO he brought to the JV his innovative and successful management techniques. He maintains active academic links, such as through his Adjunct Chairs in chemistry and managementt, and is a leader in community, professional and industrial organisations.
