Biography at time of election

Professor Potter's nomination is based upon his contributions to research and teaching
in Division Xl lEnvir_onmental Sciences), Group 4 llndustry and community) of the Academy.
Through the publication of some 140 papers in refereed international journals, Professor Potter has made significant contributions to the understanding of the ecology of fish and crustaceans in river, lake, and estuarine ecosystems in Australia, U.K. and U.S.A. His researth has provided the basis for significant improvement in the management of fisheries and the environment in the areas studied.
since coming to Western Australia as the Foundation Professor of Animal.Biology at Murdoch University in 1976, Professor Potter has built up a research group which he has led in an active research programme into the ecology of estuaries in south-western Australia. His Murdoch group has worked in close co-operation with the W.A. Fisheries and Conservation and Environment Departments which have also provided most of the funds for its research. ln addition to providing valuable research results, the Murdoch group has included 11 Honours and 8 PhD students working under Prof. Potter's supervision. Through them, Professor Potter is making a significant contribution to the training of scientists who will be the responsible for the management of the environment and the fishing industries in Australia in the future.
