Biography at time of election

Professor J. G. McLeod is acknowledged internationally for his pioneering role in developing the discipline of clinical neurophysiology within Australia. He has been responsible for the establishment and application of sophisticated electrophysiological techniques to the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of neurological conditions including the neuromuscular disorders, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy and diseases of the autonomic system. By combining these techniques with morphometric studies of peripheral and autonomic nerves under the light and electron microscope he and his colleagues have also made substantial contributions to our understanding of the pathophysiology of peripheral nerve disease. The research productivity of his group has been substantial and he has personally published over 100 papers in high quality journals as wel I as coauthoring two widely read textbooks on clinical neurophysiology. At the same time he has trained a cohort of first class clinical investigators who now occupy senior positions in University and hospital departments within Australia and overseas.
