Biography at time of election

Professor Buckle is identified with food science and technology in the University of New South Wales (University Medal 1965) and with research and the development of courses there and elsewhere, but his level of achievement is best judged on his publications and his contributions internationally.

He is author or co-author of 72 papers, mainly in international journals, of eight books/manuals and of chapters in six others.

He is in demand as a speaker at conferences in Australia and overseas, has served as a visiting professor in the University of Minnesota, and has been sought as a referee by oversea journals. Buckle's major achievement, however, is probably his long-standing association with the teaching, research and development of food science in southeast Asia where he has made a significant contribution through the post-graduate training of students from the ares, and the many visits as a consultant to teaching and other institutions; but his international contributions have also included assignments in India, Zimbabwe, Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia.

His contributions to the Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology, especially as an innovative editor of Food Technology in Australia, and to the profession were recognized by the Institute's Award of Merit for 1990. His academic worth was rewarded by promotion in January 1992 to a personal chair.
