Professor Fu has made transformative contributions to semiconductor materials science, engineering and nanotechnology. She has developed compact, energy-efficient and high-performance optoelectronic, sensing and energy technologies for applications spanning communications, defence, health and renewable energy systems. As an inventor, she has translated research into impact through patents, licensing, industry partnerships and start-up formation. She played a key role in the establishment of Acton Lasers, commercialising semiconductor laser technologies, and invented Ketowhistle, a nanomaterial-based breath ketone sensor for non-invasive diabetes monitoring. Professor Fu is a Fellow of Optica, Chair of the Australian Academy of Science National Committee on Materials Science and Engineering, and President of the Australian Materials Research Society. Through these roles and other leadership and advisory roles, she has shaped research directions, promoted diversity and inclusion, and strengthened Australia’s materials and nanotechnology ecosystem.
