Biography at time of election

Mat Darveniza is Professor in Electrical Engineering in the University of Queensland and is recognised internationally for his work on the lightning protection of power systems equipment, the results of which have been applied extensively in the electrical design of electricity power lines and in the protection of equipment, particularly of exposed transformers.

Darveniza has also been prominently associated with work in his University on high voltage engineering, and the electrical properties of wooden poles.
Darveniza has a patent for an arc-quenching device and is the author of a book -
"The Electrical Properties of Wood and Line Design". He has also written six chapters in other books and over 70 papers (sometimes with colleagues) which have been published in recognised journals.

My knowledge of Darveniza arises from my membership and later Chairmanship of the Electrical Research Board, which made substantial funds available for the work mentioned above.
