Professor Nathan Bindoff, a world-leading ocean and climate scientist, has made significant contributions to the detection, attribution and impact of climate change. He has documented global ocean shifts – including marine heatwaves, a reduction of oxygen content and an acceleration of the global water cycle – alongside transforming global oceanographic data management. Professor Bindoff was lead author on three chapters in successive Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Assessments and played a key role in writing the highly influential Summaries for Policymakers. He established and led the award-winning Climate Futures for Tasmania program, delivering high-resolution climate projections and adaptation information to the Tasmanian and Victorian governments, and a range of industries spanning wine, snowsports and energy. Professor Bindoff also led the Australian Antarctic Program Partnership, directing interdisciplinary science and translating the knowledge into policy advice.
