Professor Nick Opie is a pioneering and multi-award-winning biomedical engineer. He has played a leading role in the development and clinical translation of multiple life-changing inventions, including bionic eyes, brain-computer interfaces and deep-brain stimulation systems. He is a founder and director of two neurotechnology companies. At Synchron, he led the design, fabrication and clinical testing of Stentrode, a neural interface that has restored communication and independence to people with severe paralysis. At Ultra Bionics, he is advancing novel deep-brain neuromodulation technology to improve the lives of people with neurological and neuropsychiatric conditions, and he was recently appointed Director of ASX-listed company Control Bionics. Professor Opie has mentored and trained more than 85 teams and individuals to develop and grow their own startups. He is a scientific advisor to eight medical technology companies.
