Dr Peter Carberry is an agricultural scientist whose last position was General Manager, Applied Research, Development & Extension at the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) (2020-2023). Prior to joining GRDC, Peter was Director General of the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), headquartered in Hyderabad, India, where he was based from the start 2015. From 1986 to end 2014, he worked at CSIRO, Australia, leaving as Chief Research Scientist. Dr Carberry's research expertise is in crop physiology, in the development and application of farming systems simulation models and in use of information systems in agriculture. He was an original developer of the Agricultural Production Systems SIMulator (APSIM) modelling framework. While now retired, Peter is a Board Director on the CRC for High Performance Soils.

Biography at time of election

Dr Peter Carberry is internationally recognised in the science and application of systems research and modelling in agriculture. He is a key developer of the APSIM (Agricultural Production Systems sIMulator) model and its commercial delivery. He has been instrumental in increasing the participation of Australian farmers and agribusiness in delivering outcomes from research investments. Over the past 20 years he has led development projects in south Asia and Africa, the emphasis of which has been on improving smallholder farming through improved soil fertility management. He is a powerful advocate for Australian agricultural research in relation to global food security in national and international forums.
