Biography at time of election

After several years of experience in geophysical exploration, Dr Steedman perceived the importance and need for a technical service in physical oceanography and meteorology, coastal and ocean engineering. This was a particularly important need for ocean oil exploration and development, but is also significant for all sea bed mining and for heavy shipping operations. He therefore established R.K. Steedman & Associates, now Steedman Limited a public company, to provide these services.
Steedman Limited employs 2_0 scientists and engineers engaged in research and the application of research to numerous marine problems using electronic and instrument engineering, and mathematical and computing science. The organisation services the Australian and South East Asian offshore oil and mining industries, and Governments.
Many new measurement and analysis techniques have been developed including directional wave spectral measurements and instrumented buoys with satellite communications. Dr Steedman's work on joint probability analysis of ocean storm parameters has received international recognition.
The company is both locally and internationally recognised as one of the leading private organisations in the field. The activities of Dr Steedman represent a courageous and successful effort at the forefront of marine related technologies of considerable significance to Australian industry.
Dr Steedman also makes a considerable contribution to extra-mural technological activities through his association with the Australian Institute of Marine Science, Murdoch University, and the Academy of Science National Committee for Atmospheric Sciences.
Dr Steedman not only manages and directs this complex technological activity but continues to contribute to the science itself.
