Professor Bitmead has provided leadership and innovative research contributions to engineering in control systems and signal processing, including implementations in Australian steel and sugar industries. His research is original and constructive and has been recognised internationally though technical society awards and industrial consultancies in Australia and the United States for dynamical modelling and control. His Directorship of the CRC for Robust & Adaptive Systems has been a major vehicle for transferring technologies from ANU, DSTO and CSIRO into applications in Australian industry and for the training of many doctoral graduates to recognise the valuable application perspectives of internationally top-level research
