Biography at time of election

DR ROBERT BROWN has made major contributions to the field of mechanical engineering in Australia.

In the research area he has contributed to understanding of deformation
and wear processes in the machining and forming of metals. He is co-author of an internationally-used text on machining.

In his University life he rose from being a lecturer at the University of Melbourne to Professor and Head of Department-, Mechanical Engineering, University of Western Australia.

He made significant contributions to the understanding by students of in­dustrial processes.

His technical achievements have recently been recognized by the award of Doctor of Engineering at Monash University, the first such degree.

He was appointed Foundation Chief of the Division of Manufacturing Technology, CSIRO. He has made a major contribution by initiating research on Integrated Engineering Manufacture and the results of this research are being transferred to industry rapidly and successfully.

He has also assisted development of industry and government policies in manufacture; through the Institution of Engineers, Australia, as Chairman of the Board of its College of Mechanical Engineers and as Foundation Chairman of its National Committee on Manufacturing; by Promoting the formation of the Technology Transfer Council; and as a member of the R&D Incentives Board, the Metals Fabrication Industries· Council and the Cashman Inquiry.

Because of his preeminence in this field he is now in strong demand to advise Government and Industry.
