Robert John Clements is eminently suitable for admission to the Academy for his contribution to tropical pastures through the breeding of superior, adapted legumes, for his agriculture of national importance at a time of diminishing resources, for his services to Australian agriculture, particularly the grain industries, as either the chair or as a member of important national advisory and/or review committees, for his pivotal role in stimulating and encouraging cooperative R & D involving the major players in tropical agriculture, and for his initiatives in creating new plant breeding opportunities for the sugar industry.
