Biography at time of election

Dr. Frater has made many original and important contributions to the design and development of major Australian astronomical facilities. These innovations have influenced astronomical instrument developments overseas and many of the techniques have wider application, particularly in signal processing.

From 1967 to 1980 he lead the research team responsible for the overall development of the Fleurs Synthesis Telescope. The innovative concepts he embodied in that instrument represent a very significant contribution to the techniques of radio astronomy. They have had considerable impact on the design of the proposed Australia Telescope national facility, a project in which he is now playing a leading role
