Biography at time of election

Professor Dennis Gibson has made major contributions to the technological sciences through research, mathematical modelling and numerical simulation of Physical processes in Industry.

Chief amongst his areas of research have been the flow of gases in blast furnaces through a layered medium, in which there are phase changes and the lubrication of rough surfaces.

His principle contribution to society has, however, been as an administrator of a major tertiary education institution in Australia. Since his appointment as Director of the Queensland Institute of Technology in 1983 he has been the driving force in a comprehensive reorganization of the Institute, the transformation of QIT into the Queensland University of Technology and the amalgamation of the Brisbane College of Advanced Education with QUT.

He has provided stimulating and innovative leadership as Director of QIT and later Vice Chancellor of QUT during this period of rapid change.
