Biography at time of election
Dr Ian Mair is an Australian citizen, eminent through his achievements in engineering, including his research in structural engineering aspects of heavy haul rail systems, and particularly in regard to his leadership within the engineering profession, a leadership recognized by his forthcoming election to the Presidency of the Institution of Engineers, Australia.
Dr Mair is qualified for election to the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering within Membership Group 3-Enginering in the structural engineering field, and within Membership Group 4-Management, Development and Leadership, with contributions in areas 4.1, 4.2 and particularly 4.4. His contributions in all fields should be taken into account, but it is suggested it is particularly his innovative leadership within the engineering profession that qualifies him for election.
Dr Mair has a wide range of engineering interests in engineering research, engineering education, and in the ethics of the profession. His particular strengths, in his industrial activities and within the profession, lie in the strategic development and planning fields. He has a keen mind, and is an articulate analyst He would contribute significantly to the activities and objectives of the Academy.
