OBITUARY

Sir Roderick Carnegie died on 14/07/2024

Sir Rod Carnegie was elected to the Academy in 1985 for his contributions to mining and business leadership in Australia and around the world.

Sir Rod had a long career in industry in the USA, Europe and Australia, working for significant global businesses McKinsey, in the consulting space, and CRA (now RioTinto), in mining.

He also served as Director on the Boards of multiple well-known organisations, including General Motors, the CSIRO, the Business Council of Australia, and the Group of Thirty, and was chairman of the Advisory Committee on Relations with Japan.

Rod was awarded a Knight Bachelor in 1978 in recognition of his services to industry, and in 2001 was awarded a Centenary Medal for his service to Australian society in resource development and management. In 2003 he was awarded Companion of the Order of Australia in recognition of his service to the promotion of innovative leadership and to the development of competitive practices in business.

Biography at time of election

Sir Roderick Carnegie has had a notable career in industry, first in USA and Europe and since 1970 in CRA Limited in Australia. Since 1974 he has been Chairman and Managing Director of this influencial and expanding company, taking it into several challenging international ventures.

Under his stimulating leadership the CRA group has considerably widened its technological base and has become an energetic participant in such new fields as "in-situ mining", biotechnology and·radically new methods of steelmaking.

He has given service on several important government and public bodies including the Jackson Committee, the Australia­China Council, the Consultative Committee on Relations with Japan (Chairman) and the Business Council of Australia.

He was created a Knight Bachelor in 1978 for his services to Industry.
