Based on the CSIRO-invented lance technology at a scale suitable for smelting 50 kg batches of molten materials, Roger Player provided the technical leadership and many of the key contributions to the joint development by CSIRO and Mount Isa Mines Limited of the ISASMELT high intensity non-ferrous smelting process.
The technology has been applied to lead and copper smelting and is under development for zinc smelting.
This clean and energy-efficient process is now in operation on a 30 000 tonne demonstration copper plant at Mount Isa. A fully commercial lead smelter is under construction for commissioning in December 1990.
