Biography at time of election

Professor Swift has made an outstanding international contribution to research in many aspects of soil chemistry, particularly in the areas of organic matter, nutrient behaviour and cycling and the reactions of heavy metals and other inorganic and organic species at soil colloid surfaces. His work has challenged existing ideas and established new concepts; these have led to new research directions and an exk:nsive publication record.
He has demonstrated excellent management and leadership skills in the high offices he has held in academic, research and government organisations. In each of his academic positions he has improved the quality of research and been responsible for the design and introduction of new degree courses which combine the rigour of basic science with emphasis on its application to agriculture and the environment. He has been elected by his peers to high office and leadership positions in national and international societies. He is very highly regarded by his colleagues for both his scientific ability and personal qualities.
