His postharvest research on fruit and vegetables produced novel treatments that have wide commercial use in Australasia and, through FAO and AIDAB, provided unique research and training skills to institute staff in China, Korea and ASEAN. His pioneering establishment of the composition of Australian foods resulted in a complete revision of the Australian food tables, and stimulated interests of food industry management, consumers and health professionals in the relationship between foods, nutrients and health. His recent leadership of the grain research academy has established an end-use research program that promises to give Australia a competitive edge in international markets.
