Thang's nomination is based on his outstanding research innovation in polymer and materials science. Thang is a prominent member of the CSIRO team that invented the RAFT polymerization - a novel tool that enables the synthesis of polymeric materials of precisely-defined structure and desired properties. RAFT has generated enormous academic and industrial interest worldwide. The invention has led to the emergence of nearly 2,900 papers being published on RAFT work, and 50 companies/institutions have filed over 300 patents that depend on RAFT polymerization for diverse applications ranging from performance coatings, adhesives and membranes to cosmetics, biomaterials and drug delivery.
