Professor Simon Lucey is an internationally recognised AI researcher whose work has advanced foundational methods in machine learning and computer vision and enabled their deployment in large-scale engineering systems. His contributions to visual representation, efficient learning algorithms and autonomous perception have been translated into safety-critical autonomous vehicle platforms, large-scale financial systems and widely adopted benchmark datasets used across academia and industry. As Director of the Australian Institute for Machine Learning, he led the development of nationally significant AI capability, training a skilled workforce and overseeing major partnerships across government and global technology and defence organisations. Through research, translation and institution-building, he has strengthened Australia’s capacity to develop and deploy advanced AI technologies and contributed to the global evolution of modern machine learning.
