Professor Dwyer led the Tasmanian Infant Health Study which identified sleeping position as a major cause of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and developed the intervention which led to reduction in Australian SIDS deaths from 500 in 1991 to 70 in 2003.

He is leading in the global collaboration of children's prospective cohort studies involving over 700,000 infants and children which focuses on environmental and genetic causes of childhood leukemia sponsored by National Institute of Health, USA.

He has published over 160 papers in internationally circulated journals and in 2005 he had 93 papers cited with over 300 citations in all.
